About MESA
Madison Emergency Services Association - A Beacon of Hope since 1982
Our History
In 1982, members of local churches, civic organizations, and concerned citizens came together to address the growing needs of Madison County residents facing difficult times. What started as a small group of dedicated volunteers has grown into a vital community resource.
For over four decades, MESA has been providing food pantry services and emergency financial assistance to our neighbors. We've helped thousands of families through challenging circumstances, always treating each person with dignity and compassion.
Today, MESA continues its mission with the same spirit of community service that inspired our founders. We remain committed to being a beacon of hope for Madison County.

Patricia “Trish” Livingston
President
Born in North Carolina, Trish has lived in Madison full-time for four years. She joined the Board in February 2022, became interim President in June 2022, and was elected President in November 2022. She previously volunteered at The Lamb Center in Arlington for two years and served bagged lunches to the homeless with D.C. Metro Church. She values making a difference locally and helped add evening and Saturday pantry hours starting in November 2022. She aims to reach underserved county residents by attending fairs and community events, and takes pleasure in returning MESA to its community-run roots.
Jim Duszynski
Vice President
Born in Washington, D.C., Jim lived in the D.C. Metro area much of his life and moved to Madison in early 2020, calling it “home.” He has served as Vice President since joining the Board in September 2022. He previously served two terms as a Board Director for Youth for Tomorrow, a non-profit serving children without stable homes. He and his wife got involved “so we could contribute to the community and to serve those individuals.” He enjoys volunteering at the Food Pantry and maintaining the building, and is excited to expand MESA’s reach for food and emergency funds.
Erin Nicholls
Treasurer
Erin joined the Board in 2019 and has been Treasurer since 2021. A 20+ year real estate veteran and Certified Property Manager (CPM), she oversees a multifamily investment portfolio in the Southeast. She has led a local Girl Scout troop for five years and is excited to grow the support network in Madison amid rising Food Pantry client numbers.
Celene Pumphrey
Secretary
Celene has lived in Madison over 20 years and, after traveling the world in her youth, enjoys living within a one-mile radius. She has served MESA for 13 years, developing a love for serving others through the Food Program since her first day picking up donated food from Trader Joe’s. She is active in her church, Mount Carmel of Haywood, serves on the Madison Strong Community Coalition, and volunteers at events like Madison Day. Through MESA and her Social Services work, she sees how the community comes together in times of need.
Robin Sweely
Director
Robin has served MESA as a volunteer, director, and board member over the past two years. She is also President and Executive Director of a non-profit called Humane Equine Aid and Rapid Transport (HEART), serving horse shows, polo, and events along the East Coast, as far west as Omaha and south as Texas. She enjoys advancing MESA’s mission to help Madison residents in need and would “like to get the message out that we are here to help anyone.” She is excited about revamping MESA’s business practices.

Loren Roberts
Director
Lori Roberts has lived in Central Virginia for more than 25 years, including 20 years in Charlottesville and Crozet and the past five years in Madison. She has served on the Salvation Army of Charlottesville Board for the past three years and began volunteering with MESA in August 2025.
